DATZ stands for Deborah's A to Z Music System. It is a music theory system I created and began teaching more than 35 years ago. The DATZ Music System came from a passion I have had since I was 12 years old.
The first instrument I learned to play was the clarinet, but it was after I started playing piano that I found my passion for music theory. I discovered patterns and shapes that I did not see when I was playing a single-line instrument. Now, the notes were talking to each other—poetry in sound!
By the time I got to Mannes College in New York City where I was a piano performance major, I was surprised to see many students dislike music theory and think it was hard to understand. I felt they were missing the advantage of the keyboard, among other things, and I thought about this a lot.
Before I graduated, the college asked me to join the piano faculty! I was thrilled and I accepted, but also asked if I could teach music theory. They gave me two music theory classes of 11th-grade high school students to teach. After studying with me, they all took advanced placement music theory exams, and they all placed into the second year of college music theory.
I have been hooked on teaching music theory in conjunction with piano ever since.
In my quiet time, I enjoy “chillaxing” with Coco, my irrepressible Coton de Tulear (he's sitting on my lap in the picture of me performing in my studio at our home), house hunting for clients’ forever homes (yes I have a real estate license!), and I am a *serial* language learner, currently studying (deep breath—here goes!) French, Italian, Spanish, German, Latin, Norwegian… and a few more!
